Methodology

For Pugh, teaching is an essential part of any academic, creative, or writing process. Drawing upon his background as a theater maker and someone who has worked on devised processes, Pugh seeks to stress that any writing is necessarily a dialogue within the self, with other writers, and with other artists.

Inspired by the use of embodied knowledge and performance within theater, he also seeks to disrupt the static notion of writing only being something that is done at a desk. His writing practice includes traveling through physical space, interacting with materials, implicating imagination into nonfiction writing, and using writing to reflect sensory, aesthetic, sonic, and affective experiences.

Over the course of his time at Wesleyan University, Pugh enrolled in classes with the following professors:

  • Critical Analysis: Rashida Z. Shaw McMahon, Katherine Brewer Ball, Heather Vermeulen, Natasha Korda, Eirene Visvardi, Yu-ting Huang, Amy Tang

  • Non-Fiction: Lisa Cohen, Danielle Vogel, Elizabeth Boberick

  • Arts Journalism: Ronald Jenkins, Katherine Brewer Ball

  • Playwriting: Edwin Sanchez

  • Musical Theater: Nathan Dame, Robert Baumgartner

  • Devised Immersive Performance: Tom Pearson
