Nathan Pugh

Nathan Pugh (NAY-then PEW) is a writer with experience in journalism, criticism, dramaturgy, teaching, and arts administration.

Pugh’s writing combines critical analysis with creative nonfiction. He explores how identities and history are performed, onstage and in everyday life. As a member of the gay, biracial, and Filipino American communities, Pugh carefully shares his communities’ private conversations in a more public way.

His essay “Why I Left the Kennedy Center” was one of the most-read American Theatre articles in 2025, and was referenced in The New York Times.

Pugh is currently a freelance writer in the Washington, D.C. area, contributing to DC Theater Arts, Smithsonian magazine, 1 Min Critic, Equity News magazine, Washington City Paper, 3Views on Theater, and Theatrely.
